html5, blogging, ee…

This weekend has seen me working on the new design of this very blog, this isn’t something I’ve not been doing for a while, I’ve had the goal of getting this thing off tumblr (even though i highly recommend this to any blogger!) and onto Expression Engine since early February…

It’s been half built for a while, in written xhtml 1 strict… with a few tweaks here and there to the css before I could start getting it integrated into Expression Engine, I’ve dabbled in html5 for before, but I’d not consider myself anywhere close to something of an expert on the topic, but during a week that I attended the DIBI conference in Gateshead (which was amazing!) some of my colleges were at a workshop in Leeds about html5.

So I’ve taken the first steps into rewriting my code in 5 (with the help of stu), it’s one thing making a “one-page” effort in html5 (a pretty easy one at that) but it’s completely another whether you’re doing it right (as its very easy to incorrectly use some of the new tags and such) and again a completely different kettle of fish when your writing an full website or blog in html5!

Some interesting headaches await i’m sure, but i’m enjoying it! I’ll try keep you informed on how things develop.

We Have Band - Hear It In The Cans

We Have Band

Although it might win the award for Least Imaginative Album Title Of 2010, the content of We Have Band’s electrifying debut is anything but. The album begins with two slow atmospheric tracks leading into the 1980s synthpop-driven beat of Divisive. From thereon in, Heaven 17 and Human League influences echo throughout with nods to contemporaries Bloc Party and Wild Beasts. The first album from the London trio is a well-defined effort, effortlessly darting between indie-disco beats and electronic ambience, helped along by soothing female vocals to contrast the male lead. An excellent debut.

Out of the Ashes

Some of you might have already seen it, some of you might have already heard of it, and an even smaller proportion of you might have even got “one”.

Before I tell you what i’m talking about
I’ll give you a bit of a back story. In late 2009, I set myself a few challenges, some have happened, some didn’t (and wont), and some are still ongoing, and some did…but then didn’t. All rather complicated really, but that is definately how my brain works…

Getting back on track
Cutting to the chase as it were, I started a photo blog, with the aim to take a photo every single day of a year, and post them for everyone to be amazed by, and it worked, for about a week, then i stopped uploading, it’s not been a complete fail, i’ve done more “photogaphy” in the first 3 months of this year than i did in all of last year. I still take photos, just not everyday… the camera on iPhones does suck, but that wasn’t a reason behind me stopping. (on an unrelated note I’m very soon be the proud owner of a HTC Desire)

So instead of my original plan
I’ve incorporated the idea into my “designed by ilove” t-shirt design work over at mysoti. I’ve changed the blog’s design, it’s no longer located at daily.iamjamie.co.uk finding it’s new home on www.designedbyilove.co.uk and it’s going to (hopefully) be going from strength to strength! so you’ll be noticing posts on my twitter account with the hashtag of #ilove linking to updates on the ilove blog (which will be more regularly updated tha this here blog…)

I think i’ve covered everything I was hoping to here… looking forward to the future!

Playing with Lomography!

After not really seeing the point of it all when my good friend nick got a bit addicted, i’ve become irationally obsessed with playing around in photoshop trying to get a nice little lomo effect on random images off my facebook page… here is the result, with helpful “before” and “after” playing states of me teaching the nephew how to play football!

The 10k

There’s only a week left before we enter March, and it’s got be thinking again, the time really is flying until I run my very first half marathon (well almost…it’s only 10k not 13) along with Mr Woodcock.

It’s on 23rd May 2010 which is only 90 days away from now! raising money for the Jane Tomlinson’s Appeal. With all this baring down on me, and to be fair, I am in better shape than I have been since I got fat at uni…from the training i’ve already done, but from now on i’ve decided to really step my training up a gear!

Presenting the new www.iamjamie.co.uk website, officially going live sometime Sunday! so keep a watchout!

New Design Sneak Peek

Well hello again! I know, it’s been a while, but that is because I’ve been a rather busy chap! I’ve more or less completed my third week at the new job (check out Strawberry here) and it’s been quite rounded. Working through my task list, making changes to stuff from client feedback, and even getting my hands dirty with illustrator (something that doesn’t happen too often!).

When the day is done (5:30pm-ish for anyone interested) I have been going home, after getting something to eat, going for a workout at the gym (I’m training for a 10k run in hull). I’ve settled down in-front of my computer, to slowly, but surely, get my latest and greatest (but of course I’m going to think it’s great!) design for my personal website finished so that it can be appreciated by anyone who wants to look at it…

A while ago, I wasn’t feeling as creative or as arty as I think I should, so to try and get my juices going I decided that I needed to do something out of my comfort zone. The progressive adoption of HTML5 and CSS3 rendering in the latest browsers made my decision of what I should work on that would be out of said comfort zone, very easy.

As much as I like my other web offering (jamiewright.net) as I feel it’s got a very clean style, I do think it’s a bit on the boring side… I really think that my latest offering is a country mile away from “yawnsville”, with what I’m told by Dave and Kerry is my signature “bold-with-lots-of-colour” style.

Check after the jump to see the preview of my new design!

Week In Review

As i’m sure you’re not aware, so I’ll fill you in, this was the first week in my new job, a web designer at StrawberryDigitalHave I enjoyed it? Massively! With hindsight was my ‘voluntary’ redundancy a blessing in disguise? Definately.

I’ve joined ahighly talented group of people that aren’t just either a designer or developer, but are all rounded, great in photoshop, and great with code, these kind of people aren’t a ‘dime a dozen’ so i’m feeling pretty privilaged to be part of a group that I think i’m really going to excel in. My enthusiasm, over the last month has, in all honesty, been a shadow of normality, but i’ve already found my burning desire again.

I feel like i’m finally, actually working for a real media company, as bad as that sounds, so basically in conclusion, what a difference a week can make…

Foreplay tee by ilove. Available from MySoti.com.About 6 months ago, myself and Nick played on the idea of making custom t-shirts and trying to sell them, and in a probably more half hearted attempt, than 100% effort, we did. Surprisingly we’ve just sold one lol! (the one you can see to the right to be exact!)
